Both September and October event calendars are now updated. Click Here

Now that it’s cooling down and the garden activities will be winding down, it’s about time for some serious quilting time.  The early dark evenings lend themselves to sitting in front of the machine, or hand sewing in the rocking chair.  It may also be time to look at learning something new, joining a friend or two and taking a class, or coming to a class and making new friends.

We have some great classes coming up in the next few months, and then December we’ll back off and enjoy our families and the hectic pace of the holiday events.

In September Kathie will teach you how to Paper Piece so that you will be ready to take Debbie’s class in October to make the Tree Skirt/Table Topper, a design by Judy Neimeyer.  We have samples of what Kathie will teach you, along with Debbie’s Table Topper in the shop.  Of course, you’re allowed to use the paper piecing technique for other projects, but you’ll definitely need it for Debbie’s class.  Kathie has 2 dates set up for her class, so if you can’t make it on the 8th, schedule the 20th, but definitely put her on your calendar.

If you’ve noticed the samples of the Kaleidoscope design in the shop, Jan will be here the 11th to help you make your own.  One of mine is just plain old fabric, although it is purple so it’s really good plain old fabric, the other is made with a Jenny Beyer border print which makes this an entirely elegant piece.  We have several new border prints in stock that will make a terrific quilt, runner or blocks for other projects like jackets, vests or bags.  Jan’s sense of fun will make this class an experience in more ways than one, so sign up soon.  The hardest part is deciding which fabric combinations to use!

Kathie has scheduled another 2 part beginning sewing class, with part 1 on the 16th of September.  Kathie will also do a 1-on-1 class with you to teach you how to sew with your machine. It’s been very successful so that may be preferable to you.  Give us a call and we’ll arrange it.  On the 18th she will have a beginning Quilting Piecing class.  She’s done a very cut sample that’s in the shop that will teach you all the beginning techniques. From there you can go anywhere.

Now, I want you to know that Kathie doesn’t live at the shop, but she’s very good about sharing her life with us.  That really neat Big Shirt, made with Batiks, is the sample of the class she will be teaching on the 22nd.  You will learn to adjust the pattern to your size, along with the placement of the fabrics for best affect.

Do you have trouble with some of those finishing duties, like bindings, sleeves, mitered corners, sashings, cornerstones/posts?  Kathie will have her Techniques class again on the 24th.  The last one she did has helped all the students go home and FINISH projects that were waiting for completion.  What a great feeling that is, and you might just have a whole stack of Christmas gifts done by learning one or two “tricks of the trade”.  No, no, she’s not teaching you that!

September sees our kick off of the Batik Stars Block of the Month. It’s on the website, but you really should see it in person.  It will be a star filled year, that’s for sure, but I think it will be fun for you.  Sign up soon so you’re ready to begin with the rest of the group. We will have the first night and in a year, the last night, and pick up the rest of the year. No evening sessions, no demanding rules, no hour long advertising sessions, just a great pay-as-you-go quilt.

Peggy Gelbrich will be back in October and November with her Hunter’s Star and Batik Pyramid classes.  Watch for those samples on the website and soon at the shop. She’s such a great teacher, please make her classes a part of your schedule.

That Brazilian Embroidery stuff will be in soon, so keep that in mind.  Threads, some beginning books and notions will be on hand, and I’ll order patterns on request. It only takes a few days to get the patterns and I’d rather order the ones you really want.  Polly and Bonnie will be arranging classes for the samples that will be on hand.  We can’t wait to get started!
