Youth Sewing Program
Canby Quilt & Fabric will be sponsoring a Youth Sewing Program Beginning in October, 2010. Here’s how we envision it working:
Up to 6 youth students will come in after school for a beginning sewing class once a month for 3 months. When they have mastered the beginning criteria, they will move to tier 2. They will come for 3 months, once a month, until they have that segment mastered, moving up to tier 3 and then to tier 4. While these students are progressing, a new group will begin their beginning sewing class and moving up. The ultimate goal is to have a weekly class with various learning skills and criteria provided.
For this vision, Debbie Barber will be our principal instructor, with volunteers to help and fill in. We are excited for her to begin, as we know that our youth may not have the opportunity to learn this elsewhere.
What can you do to help? If you have a working beginning type sewing machine that you could donate to this program, it would be much appreciated. Not a fancy, computerized machine, just a plain Jane that goes forward and back, with a zigzag stitch. These students need to learn about the machine and how it works.
There will be a cost of $10 per student, per tier, as even a minimal fee adds value. The donations of the show will supply the rest. If a student just can not pay the fee, scholarships will be available from the show fund.
Another way you can help is to send us your youth, boys and girls. The classes will remain small for many reasons, but we hope to have many students sewing this time next year, and for many years after that!
Thank you for all your help, in any way you can.
